Johanna Kivimägi (1992) started her composition studies in 2011 in Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre (Eesti Muusika- ja Teatriakadeemia) with Tõnu Kõrvits and Galina Grigorjeva. She spent a year in Reykjavik improving her skills in Iceland Arts Academy (Listahaskoli Islands) under the guidance of Pall Ragnar Pallson and Anna Thorvaldsdottir. In 2016 she continued her studies in Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre with Malle Maltis and recieved her Masters degree in 2018 in electroacoustic composition. In the fall of 2018 she studied at Music Academy of Malmö as a student of Kent Olofsson and is currently doing internship with composer Páll Ragnar Pállson in Reykjavik.

Johanna Kivimägi has written works for choirs, ensembles, solo instruments, she has written electroacoustic and electronic pieces. A big part of her works are collaborations with artists from different fields. She has written music for installations, videos, animation videos and dance performances. Her works have been performed in Estonian Music Days, Autumn Festival of Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, Immersive Future ZKM in Karlsruhe, New York City Electroacoustic Music Festival, Treffpunkt, Gaudeamus Muziekweek and Commute festival. Her music has been part of exhibitions and performances in Tallinn, London, Reykjavik, Paris, Venice and Vienna.

In her works she seeks for smoothness and natural progression. Kivimägi works with acoustic and electronic tools and tries to find the symbiosis between them. It is important for her to create a new world of sounds that touches the listener in different ways and creates a new state of mind.

Hõbõhõnõ (2019) is an electroacoustic piece written for HELI&KEEL concert series. The word "Hõbõhõnõ" means "silver" in seto language.

Falling Indefinitely pt. 3

Falling Indefinitely (2019) is part of a project with vocal ensemble "Sinilind" where gregorian chant and electroacoustic music were mixed together in one program. This electronic part is subtly melting into and taking over a canon sung a capella.

Muutuda, et jääda samaks (2018) for soprano, alto saxophone, electric guitar, accordion, piano and electronics (originally quadrophonic setting). Performed by Ensemble Arsenale in Estonian Music Days concert "Elusate helide maja" in 2018. ​

Muundumine (2017) is a piece for piano and electronics for quadrophonic speaker setting. Premiere 1.06.2017, kohvik 7C, performed by Elle-Riin Volmer (piano) and Johanna Kivimägi (electronics). This recording is a stereo version of the piece.

Reflection

Johanna Kivimägi

Reflection (2017) is a piece for flute, electronics (5.1 speaker setting) and video. Video is made by Valentin Siltsenko. It is originally written to perform with live flute, electronics (first version was in stereo) and interactive video. There is also an installation version where all the media is fixed (it was made for inSonic2017 festival that took place in december 2017 at ZKM in Karlsruhe). The electronic part is made out of prerecorded flute sounds of the same material as the flute part.
